Meet our team: Maintenance Apprentice, Jack Dunwell

Published: 16.11.22 | by Gayle Summers, Estate Administrator | 3 minute read

Maintenance apprentice, Jack, has supported Paul and Rod on the estate for the last year.

Jack is a popular figure around the estate. You may have seen him on social media or driving around on The Nostell Estate tractor. Jack, the estate apprentice, is at the opposite end of the career spectrum to Paul and Rod, who have over 50+ years of combined experience in maintaining the estate! It’s Jack’s first year as an apprentice, and, I’m sure you’ll agree, that he’s in good hands with these two experienced mentors. Here’s a bit more information about our youngest team member…

my role involves…

Everything! I’m here to learn about every property and grounds maintenance aspect. Under the guidance of Rod and Paul, my tasks include: cutting grass, clearing up leaves, hedge trimming, painting and woodworking, among many others! Many tasks require qualifications to handle the equipment safely, which is incorporated into my training.

a typical day includes…

It depends on what task I’m doing. Projects can take two or three days – or even longer – to finish! For example, cutting the grass in the business park can take two or three days. I’ve recently been helping Paul and Rod renovate Keepers Cottage (a residential property on the estate), which involved lots of painting!

I’ve worked here for…

Just over a year. I’m currently an apprentice (from Wakefield College), and I’m working towards permanent employment. I was attracted to the apprenticeship because my dad was a joiner, and I wanted to follow a vocational career path, too. Although I considered becoming an electrician, I quickly realised that working for The Nostell Estate would give me a taste of everything.

when I’m not working, I enjoy…

Socialising with my friends and playing video games. I enjoy playing FIFA on the Xbox. I also support Leeds, so I like watching football on weekends.

if I won the lottery, I would…

Go on holiday – somewhere warm! It’s not as cold as you’d think working outside, as long as you have the right clothing on, but it would be nice to not worry about getting kitted up, especially with the colder months approaching.

I last went on holiday to…

Mallorca, for a family wedding.

people don’t know this about me, but…

I’m actually part Spanish! My grandma was Spanish. I don’t speak the language, unfortunately, but my dad does.

my star sign is…

Aries.

Although I’m not really into all that!

what would your superpower be?

Teleportation. So I could get home quicker!
