Maintenance operative, Rod, specialises in building maintenance and is a popular figure with Estate tenants.

Maintenance operative, Rod, specialises in building maintenance. He’s certainly an expert in Estate maintenance, having worked here since 2000! When we speak to tenants around the Estate, Rod is always mentioned as a benefit to working here – he is always ready with a cheerful hello to everyone that passes. You may have spoken to Rod recently, but we’re pretty sure there are still some things about him you may not yet know. We found out more about the man behind building maintenance…

My role involves…

A bit of everything! I look after building maintenance, working alongside my fellow maintenance operative, Paul, and apprentice, Jack. Looking after Estate maintenance involves anything from ongoing project work (such as the renovation of empty residential properties) to emergency requests.

A typical day includes

Most days are a mixture of long-term maintenance projects with regular weekly and monthly maintenance and ad-hoc jobs and emergencies. We do a lot of work on the residential side of Nostell too. So in one day, I could go from plastering a wall at one of our cottages, to returning to the business park to pick up our tenants’ rubbish.

I’ve worked here since…

June, 2000! I’m local to the area, and I’ve always enjoyed the fact that no two days are the same. My work is very varied, and I love working outside.

When I’m not working I enjoy…

Walking. I love taking off to the Moors, Lake District and the Dales.

If I won the lottery I would…

Buy a place in the country, probably up in the Dales. No definite location in mind, I just like it all.

People don’t know this about me but…

I’m a retired skydiver and held a full international license for many years. I did 287 dives in total, but the first time I did a freefall was probably the best (and scariest!). I trained in Bridlington and then dived a lot in Doncaster, but I’ve done it all over the world, as far afield as Spain.

More recently, for my 60th birthday, I flew in a spitfire. The pilot was an RAF test pilot and demonstrated diving down to ‘attack’ a train and performed a loop the loop and other acrobatics.

My superpower would be…

It goes without saying, really…FLYING!

My favourite food is…

Chips, roasts and sage and onion stuffing

My favourite drink is…

Theakstons Old Peculiar

My star sign is…

Taurus
